Description
Milestone opposite No. 51 is an 18th-century milestone for the Dunstable-St. Albans-London Turnpike Trust, established by an Act of Parliament in 1722. This milestone is located on the stretch of Watling Street that was retained by Thomas Telford when he improved The Holyhead Road for mail coaches in the early 19th century. It was cut off by the A5 bypass completed around 1957. The milestone is made of white freestone and has a rectangular section measuring about 12 inches by 15 inches, buried so that only the top 18 inches and the upper inscription are visible. The north and east faces have been cut back for repeated recutting of inscriptions. The current inscriptions are in 19th-century sans-serif capitals, with the narrower north face reading 'LONDON/28/MILES', while the broader east face starts with the figure '5' but is otherwise illegible.
