Description

Numbers 117, 119 (The Old Red Lion House), and 121 comprise two adjacent houses, now used as two houses and a shop. The building dates to the 17th century or earlier, with an 18th-century brick front, 19th-century stucco fronts and a shopfront to Numbers 119 and 121, and later rear extensions. Number 117 was formerly The Star and Garter public house until around 1970, and Number 119 was The Old Red Lion public house before 1914.

The building has a timber frame, exposed at the northern end with renewed brick infill in a chequered red and grey pattern. It features a stucco plinth and painted stucco facing to Numbers 119 and 121. The roof is steep, covered with old red tile. The construction is a long, two-storey block facing west onto the High Street, with the southern end on the corner of Hicks Road. The west front has two first-floor windows in each of the three sections. Number 117 has end chimneys and a two-storey rear wing to the northeast.

The north gable framing reveals the building was originally jettied to the front and incorporates jowled posts, a cambered tie beam, a clasped-purlin roof on collar with vertical struts, and a 4-inch deep brick front in Flemish bond. The front includes two 2-light Yorkshire sliding casement windows under the eaves, a diamond pattern of red header bricks in the middle, applied vermiculated rustication serving as lintels with raised keystones over the lower windows, a flush box sash window with 8/8 panes to the left, and a triple sash with small panes to the right of a four-panelled door. The door is set within a moulded doorcase with corner blocks, paterae, and a moulded cornice. Number 119 features two transomed casement windows with shutters, and a recessed three-light window to the south of the lobby entrance, near a chimney. Number 121 has two sash windows with 3/6 panes over a neat, pilastered shop front with a canted corner entrance. The south gable has a flush box sash window with 6/6 panes under a cusped bargeboard and above a return of the shop front. The building forms a picturesque corner plot at the beginning of the older section of the High Street.
