Description
This is a house, now divided into two commercial properties. It likely dates from the 17th century or earlier, with a brick front dating to the 18th century and shopfronts from the 19th century. The building has a timber frame, visible in the rear wing and the north gable of number 97, with red brick infill and a painted brick ground floor at the rear. The main front is of chequered red and blue brick, with the left-hand portion roughcast and the upper part tilehung on a north extension to the rear wing. The roofs are steep with old red tiles, with raised front eaves, except for the north extension and a rear outshut which have slate coverings.
The L-shaped building fronts onto the High Street facing west and has a 1 1/2-storey north extension to the rear wing. A large internal chimney is positioned roughly a third of the way from the southern end, and another chimney is at the junction with the rear wing. The five-window west front has transomed flush wooden casement windows on the first floor, set under segmental arches. The shopfronts are unremarkable. There are older two- and three-light casement windows on the south face of the rear wing. The front range has a clasped-purlin roof structure, visible in the north gable, revealing an end rafter of a much steeper original front slope. The stepped-out frontage implies the building once had a projecting upper floor (jetty), which was later infilled.
