Description
Graveley Bury is a farmhouse that has been converted into two houses. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and features a timber frame with roughcast and steeply pitched old red tile roofs. The building is designed in an H-plan, with the hall range slightly higher than the wings, and it faces east.
The west rear end of the south wing is half-hipped. A large rear wall chimney projects from the northern part of the hall range, while the two-and-a-half bays of the northern parlour wing project both to the front and rear. This wing includes a narrow stair bay at the rear and a large external lateral chimney on its north wall. There is a similar large chimney on the south wall of the south wing, which is likely a service wing, also projecting to the front and rear. The southern part of the hall range has an inserted internal chimney that backs onto the south wing and a staircase at the rear, indicating an enlargement of the original cross-passage.
The east front features two windows on each floor of the hall range, a central entrance, and a window on each floor of each wing. There is also a separate door into the south wing, which now forms No. 2. The first floor has flush casement windows of two and three lights, while the ground floor of the south wing has sash windows with small panes and external shutters. To the right of the entrance, there are triple sash windows, with 6/6 panes to the left of the entrance. The main entrance has a four-panel flush-beaded door set in a heavy frame with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets, while the door to No. 2 is a plank door.
Inside, the building features a clasped-purlin roof, jowled posts, close studding, and two-light ovolo-moulded blocked small windows flanking an 18th-century three-light leaded casement in the chamber above the hall. The hall range and parlour wing contain axial beams that are chamfered with hollow stops. The projecting hall chimney has tumbled brick offsets, and there are remains of panelled pargetting.
