Description
Crow End is a house dating from the 16th century, with a southern extension to the eastern wing and rebuilding of the eastern part of the northern wing around 1968. The building features exposed timber framing on the northern gable of the eastern wing and the western gable of the northern wing, with plaster infill panels. The western part of the northern range has dark weatherboarding, and the first floor of the eastern front of the eastern wing is also weatherboarded. The rest of the house is roughcast, while the ground floor of the southern and western sides of the newer sections is built of red brick. The house has steep old red tile roofs and is L-shaped, consisting of a large house with a one-and-a-half-storey wing backing onto the road and facing south, and a two-storey eastern wing at an obtuse angle adjoining the eastern end of the northern wing, which extends to the southeast and is entered from the western courtyard in the angle of the wings. The windows are flush casements with two and three lights. The eastern wing formerly had an internal chimney and a two-cells plan, now extended by one cell at the southern end with an internal southern gable chimney. There is a flat-topped dormer on the southern roofslope of the northern wing. The exposed framing on the northern gable of the eastern wing features heavy jowled posts, a central unjowled post, and a mid-height rail. The interior showcases substantial timber framing on the upper floor with curved braces, wind-braces, clasped purlins, and some chamfered and stopped joists.
