Description

Two adjoining houses, West View Cottage and Kate’s Cottage, are located on Church Lane in Graveley. The southern house is likely from the 16th century, while the northern house dates to the 17th century. They are timber-framed structures with roughcast render. The northern house has dark weatherboarding to the first floor and north gable end, featuring a steep roof covered with old red tiles. Kate’s Cottage, the southern house, has a steep-pitched roof now covered with shingles and lower eaves and ridge lines.

The houses form an L-shaped corner building facing west. The northern house is two storeys high, built with an internal chimney and a lobby-entry plan. It has a jettied north gable end and three windows. A gabled brick porch sits opposite the chimney, approximately a third of the way from the southern end of the house. An added gabled dormer window provides increased light to the first floor above the smaller first-floor windows. The windows are flush two-light casements. A gabled dormer window has been added to the north side. The southern house is one and a half storeys high with a swept dormer window on the front roof slope. The entrance is located in an angle with a projecting front-wall chimney, featuring a half-glazed door set within a lean-to, flanked by casement windows. It also has two-light flush casement windows. A lower, gabled, one-and-a-half storey rear wing extends to the southeast, with gable windows visible on the upper floor.
