Description

This is a house, now divided into two separate dwellings, Wayside and Oak Cottage. The original core of the building dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations and extensions in the 17th century and the 20th century. The construction is timber frame with painted brick sills and painted brick infill. The ground floor of the western part has been rebuilt in brick. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in old red tiles.

The house is a long, rectangular block, with two storeys in the older eastern part (Wayside) and one-and-a-half storeys in the western part, which features two gabled dormers at the eaves. The eastern part has three upper-floor windows, with the central window extended above the eaves as a swept dormer, and two ground-floor windows. These ground-floor windows have external wooden shutters, and a plank door is situated between them, sheltered by a lean-to timber porch. Casement windows are fitted with wrought iron frames and rectangular leaded lights. A two-storey rear wing has a weatherboarded gable triangle.

The roadside elevation of Oak Cottage shows a straight joint in the middle, indicating the western extension. An old three-light casement window is also visible. Further details on the rear elevation include a framed two-storey wing with square framing and a weatherboarded gable. The older part (Wayside) has a clasped-purlin roof with a collar truss at the eastern gable.
