Description
Nettleden Lodge is a former principal gatelodge to Ashridge, located on the abandoned eastern drive, and is now a private house. The building has a late 17th century core and was elaborated and externally remodelled in the early 19th century, likely by Jeffry Wyatt, for the Earl of Bridgewater. A rear wing was added in a similar style in the late 19th century, with northern extensions made in stages during the 20th century.
The structure features a timber frame on a plinth faced with York stone slabs that have drafted margins, with narrow red brick infill arranged in a herringbone pattern. It has steep old red tile roofs and a similar half-timbered effect throughout all extensions. The irregular T-shaped building is two storeys tall with a cellar, and the oldest part forms the southern half of the cross-bar. This section includes a two-storey gabled porch aligned with a late 17th century panelled brick internal chimney located about a third from the southern end.
To the right of the porch is a two-storey canted bay window topped with its own pointed roof, and there is a short gabled rear projection. The front of the building features heavy cusped bargeboards with pendants, an oriel window on brackets with lattice leading, and an unusual pattern of pegged framing. The base of the porch was originally open, showcasing traceried spandrels to the curved braces and Portland stone bases for the corner posts. A small pointed window is present in the gable of the porch, along with a three-light oriel window above the current plank door. The most elaborate design is found on the southern gable end facing the drive, which has a gable triangle projecting on bull-nosed beams as a deep jetty that protects a canted oriel window on the first floor. There is also a gabled open timber porch on the ground floor with a traceried gable and curved braces.
