Description

20 and 24 North Street are cottages that date from the 16th century or earlier and the 18th century. They are two stories tall, constructed from timber framing and plaster, although number 24 has part of its ground floor made of painted brick with buttress strips. The cottages have a gabled roof covered with peg tiles and form a long block that runs at right angles to the street, with the main front elevation facing south.

On the first floor, the south elevation features four two-light casement windows, each divided into four equal panes. There is a painted timber frame strip at first floor level. The ground floor includes, from west to east, a double hung sash window with vertical glazing bars, a 17th-century boarded front door, and a three-light casement window. Number 24 has a pair of front doors with attached side casements that have small panes, creating a mirrored appearance.

The gable end facing North Street has 19th-century scalloped bargeboards, a canted bay window with double hung sashes that do not have glazing bars, and an entrance door with a simple surround. On the first floor, there is a two-light casement window with a single, central horizontal glazing bar. Number 24 features a large ridge line stack at its center and a smaller stack over the party wall between the two units. Inside number 22, there is a timber frame with tie beams and jowls at a single storey height, along with evidence of later raising of the eaves line.
