Description

The pair of cottages at 21 and 23 Babelake Street date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed of painted brick, with some timber framing, and have a plain tile roof. A stack is located on the ridge, another at the right end, and a third on the front corner to the left. The cottages are 1 1/2 storeys in height. Number 21 has a timber frame of two bays arranged in an 8-panel pattern with rendered infill. It has two 20th-century windows and a dormer window, also of the 20th century. A truss gable on the left end features 20th-century windows and a door. A 20th-century outshut and a dormer are located at the rear. Number 23 exhibits occasional glimpses of timber framing, including around the front door, and has single, two-light, and three-light casement windows, along with a dormer window featuring a three-light casement and clasped rafters. A 20th-century extension and a dormer are present at the rear. The cottages are listed for their group value with number 21.
