Description
This building, located at 3/3A Market Place in Great Dunmow, is a shop with an office above, dating from the 17th century. It has been modified in the early and late 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, featuring some pargetting. It has an old tiled roof with a 19th-century brick axial chimneystack and a similar chimneystack at the rear. The building is two storeys high with attics and has one window. On the right side, there is a 20th-century gabled dormer with a 20th-century window. The first floor on the left side features a 20th-century 12-pane sash window set within an early 19th-century architrave. The left side has an early 19th-century doorcase with a flat hood and pilasters, leading to a 20th-century six-panelled door. The first floor includes four upright posts and five elaborate carved brackets, likely from the late 19th century but possibly replicating surviving 17th-century features. The shopfront is from the 20th century. Inside, the building retains corner posts and the top of the wall plate on all four walls, along with a reused tie beam of late medieval origin at the southern end of the first floor.
