Description

The Star Restaurant is a house located in Great Dunmow, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed and forms a 'U' shaped courtyard group. The main front block, which faces the Market Place, is two tall storeys high and features a half hipped gambrel peg tile roof with three gabled casement dormers. It has a thin plaster cornice-like band and a large moulded plastered name panel with scalloped corners. The first floor includes four double hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds. There is an off-centre late 18th century doorcase that has an open pediment supported by scroll brackets with a diamond motif, thin pilasters, a rectangular fanlight, and a four-panel door. To the left of the door are two double hung sashes, and to the right is one double hung sash, all with small panes and moulded surrounds.

At the northeast corner, which faces North Street, there is a storey gabled block with a peg tile roof, rendered exterior, and two slated lean-to bay windows on either side of a red brick stack, along with an oriel casement window above. The north end wall features a mixture of sashes and casements, and there is a black weatherboarded gabled wall at the northern end. The main block has a large red brick stack at the rear. At the northwest corner, facing Star Lane, there is a single storey block with a peg tile roof and gabled design, rendered over tarred weatherboarding, and it includes one gabled casement dormer. Behind this is another single storey block with a gabled slate roof and tarred weatherboarding. The rear block to the northeast shows remnants of single storey timber framing from the 16th or 17th century, featuring jowled posts.
