Description
This is a group of houses and shops dating from the 17th century or earlier. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with peg tile roofs that are gabled at the north end, hipped on the south corner, and have a lower ridge line block at the south end of the rear. There are two hipped dormers in the front roof slope, each with casement windows. A large ridge stack is positioned over number 11, and there is an end gable stack to the north.
The first floor has four double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes of glass. The ground floor features an early 19th century doorcase with Doric pilasters, a flat hood, and diamond decoration in the frieze. There is also a projecting 20th century shopfront with a flat top, along with two early 19th century doorcases and similar double-hung sash windows.
Number 1 has a single-story timber frame with jowled posts and halved and bladed scarf joints, likely dating from the 17th century. This section was later raised to two stories, and the rear is constructed of red brick. Number 11 has a ‘tunnel’ through the substantial stack on the ground floor, likely dating from the 17th century.
