Description

This is a late 16th-century house located on the east side of Great Dunmow Market Place. It is timber-framed and originally plastered, with a gabled roof covered in peg tiles. The front of the house has a pair of double-hung sash windows on each floor, featuring small panes and moulded surrounds. A recessed porch is situated off-centre on the ground floor, with an early 19th-century doorcase featuring pilaster strips, a flat hood, and a panelled frieze. Stone steps lead to the porch, and an original iron handrail is present.

Inside, the house reveals a timber-framed structure dating back to the late 16th century. Notable features include a moulded spine beam inpost and cills, along with side framing designed for a ‘T combination’ solar window. Scarf joints are halved and bladed. The roof is well-framed, incorporating side purlins and wind bracing with ‘raised collars’ on jowlless posts, covering the solar and a large first-floor chamber. An early 19th-century staircase has been inserted into an original floor opening.
