Description
Shops and flats, originally houses, dating from the 15th century or earlier. The building is timber framed and plastered with a peg tile roof, hipped at the north end and hipped with a gablet at the south. The front of the building has five double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes on the first floor, along with fragments of old pargetting. On the ground floor, from north to south, there is a 19th-century bay window with 20th-century alterations, a late 18th-century open pedimented doorcase with thin pilasters and brackets, and a good late 19th-century projecting shopfront with deep 'V' shaped glazing bars. Number 7 has an early 19th-century door surround leading to a passage and a 20th-century shopfront. An off-centre red brick stack is located in the front roof slope. Attached outbuildings run along the north end, two with peg tile roofs and the westernmost with a slate gabled roof. These have black weatherboarding and large carriage doors. Rear extensions, partially rendered and partially brick, with peg tile gabled roofs and two large gabled dormers on the north side, extend from the south end. A long peg tile cat-slide extension runs along the back. The interior reveals evidence of two former houses, both of the "hall and single crosswing" format. The northern house has fragments of a service wall and service door arrangement, and included a cross passage with spear openings; it also features a richly moulded inserted floor likely dating from the late 15th century. The other crosswing/hall is probably of the late 15th century with a later inserted floor.
