Description

This building on High Street, Maldon, is a shop and flat, dating back to the 18th century, although it has earlier origins. A 19th-century extension is located at the rear. The front of the building is timber-framed and rendered, with painted brick detailing, and has a hipped gambrel M-roof covered in plain tiles. The rear extension is of red brick and includes a gabled block and a lean-to against an adjoining property, also with plain tile roofing. The building is two storeys with an attic, featuring a four-window front. There are two hipped dormers with two-light casements and plain parapets. The first floor has four plain sash windows, while the ground floor features a 19th-century shop front with glazed tiles and a double door in a recessed entrance. The rendered side elevation has a single 16-pane sash window on the first floor, above a large-paned 19th-century window. A 20th-century single-storey building with a corrugated asbestos roof provides access to the flat at the rear of the extension. Internally, a 15th-century tie beam remains on the north-west flank, along with a jowled post supporting it in the north corner of the front range.
