Description
Nos. 101 and 103 High Street are shops with flat or storage space above, dating from the late 14th century, with a 17th-century rear wing and 19th-century alterations. The buildings are timber-framed, with the front of No. 101 rendered and No. 103 featuring painted brick; they have a slate roof that is hipped at the north-west end, with a stack on the south-east flank and another behind the north-west end.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a two-window range on the first floor of No. 101, which is ashlar rendered and has a 20th-century three-light small-paned casement window. The first floor of No. 103 features a 19th-century canted oriel with a sash window that has plate glass at the front and small panes on the sides. The ground floor of No. 101 has a deep 20th-century perspex fascia and a small-paned hardwood shop front with a brick stall-riser. No. 103 also has a perspex fascia and a 20th-century shop front with plate glass and a recessed door within a canted entrance area. The north-west flank of the front range is made of ashlar rendered brick and includes a recessed margin-glazed sash window and the stump of a stack.
The wing behind No. 101 is two storeys high, rendered, and has a gabled roof. The first floor contains one 12-pane sash window and a 19th-century eight-pane window, while the ground floor has a 12-pane sash window. There is also a gabled two-storey extension behind No. 103, which is rendered and has a gabled roof.
Inside, No. 101 features a two-bay cross-wing from the late 14th or early 15th century, with a cambered tie beam, jowled posts, and a heavy tie-beam brace. The rear extension has 17th-century framing. No. 103 retains some remnants of framing, including a boxed spine beam with quadrant moulded chamfers.
