Description
1 and 1B Market Place is a Grade II listed building located in Great Dunmow, dating from the 17th or 18th century. This former house, now shops, features a timber-framed and plastered construction. It has a two-storey 'L' shaped layout, with a taller roof facing the Market Place, hipped at the corner, and two lower ridge sections along the Stortford Road frontage.
On the Stortford Road side, the first floor has three double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds, although the center window has been infilled. The ground floor features one similar double-hung sash window and an early 19th-century doorcase, which includes elliptical attached fluted Doric columns supporting a flat hood and frieze adorned with a modified Greek fret insert. Above the semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars is an original six-panel door, characterized by oval top panels and reeded center panels.
The Market Place elevation showcases a high-quality late 19th-century projecting shopfront that wraps around from the Stortford Road side. This elevation includes five double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds above the previously mentioned shopfront, along with another late 19th-century projecting shopfront featuring wide spaced mullions, a low stallriser, and stone steps. A large chimney stack is positioned on the ridge line of the Stortford Road frontage, and remnants of ashlar plaster can be seen on the first floor.
Inside, the building reveals early 19th-century fireplaces, doors, and architraves, along with exposed timber framing in some rooms. The roof structure shows evidence of a crosswing-like design at the western end.
