Description
These shops, formerly a house, date back to the 16th century or earlier and are constructed with a timber frame and plaster. The building has two storeys, a gabled peg tile roof that is partially hidden behind a parapet on the front, and a long two-storey rear range with a concrete plain tile gabled roof. There's a gable at the rear of number 1, and a parallel block with slate roofing. A brick stack is located along the ridge line, offset from the centre.
The front of the building has four double-hung sash windows on the first floor, featuring small panes and moulded surrounds. On the ground floor, there is a carriage arch that provides access to the yard of the Saracens Head, with Doric pilasters and a flat entablature above. A 20th-century recessed shopfront is present, incorporating an early 19th-century canted bay window with small panes. Number 3 has a 19th-century projecting shopfront featuring a scroll bracket supporting the north corner. The rear range includes a mix of old casement windows, a horizontal sliding sash with small panes, and double-hung sashes. Remnants of old pargetting and a ridge line stack are also visible on the rear.
Inside, some exposed timber framing suggests a southeast crosswing and hall, with an inserted hall and a further crosswing to the northwest.
