Description
A Willett and Son Bread Bin is a Grade II listed building located on the west side of High Street in Great Dunmow. This structure, which dates back to the 16th century or earlier, originally served as a house and now contains shops and flats. It features a timber frame with plastering and has a slate gabled roof, along with four peg tile gables at the rear, one of which projects over a two-storey block with a jetty on the south side.
The front elevation, which was previously jettied, includes four double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds on the first floor. On the ground floor, starting from the northern end, there is a canted bay window with double-hung sashes, set within an early 19th-century reeded pilastered door surround that has a panelled frieze, leading to a 20th-century shopfront. Following this is a similar door surround that frames an entry passage, along with a well-crafted late 19th-century projecting shopfront featuring a contemporary door surround with a flat hood supported by scroll brackets. The shopfront retains its original gilt fascia with black lettering and arch-topped mullions.
