Description
The Saracen's Head Public House, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries, is a timber-framed and plastered building that stands two storeys high with attics. It features a gabled peg tile roof that runs parallel to the street and has three equally sized peg tiled gables at the rear. The front of the building has wide overhanging eaves, an off-centre red brick chimney stack, and a smaller stack at the southeast end of the roof. The upper floor displays a painted plaster fascia band and seven double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and a single central vertical glazing bar. The ground floor also has six similar windows, along with an off-centre doorcase that features a broken pediment and Doric pilasters, complete with a shelf for a bust in the tympanum.
At the rear, there is a two-storey timber-framed extension with a slate roof, which continues as a one-storey extension with attics and a peg tile roof, featuring a 20th-century gabled dormer. Inside, the building reveals a mid-16th-century timber-framed structure with chamfered joists, along with significant alterations from the mid to late 18th century. A staircase with turned balusters from the mid-18th century is supported by a Tuscan newel post with a plinth resembling a swollen column. On the first floor, there is an unusual internal doorcase resembling a Serliana, with pedimented heads, scroll brackets, Gothick panelling, and a flat entablature on either side over contemporary fitted cupboards. All doors are original six-panel raised and fielded doors, and some fragments of 17th-century panelling can also be found.
