Description

Boyes Croft is a building of flats, originally a house, dating back to the 17th century or earlier. It has a distinctive ‘H’ plan layout, with gabled crosswings at the east and west ends, all covered in clay peg tiles. An extension block of two storeys was added to the east end, and currently incorporates a craft shop on the ground floor. A further two-storey gabled block, also with a peg tile roof, stands at the rear of the west end. This section features a large, gabled dormer window facing north-west, and contains double-hung sash windows with small panes.

The front facade of the building has double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes above, on each of the crosswings. The central section of the first floor also features two double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes. The ground floor has a grand entrance surround dating from around 1840, with a cornice hood supported by large scroll brackets. Contemporary cast iron hood scrapers are positioned on either side of the door, which itself has a single glazed panel above two tall vertical panels and a lion’s head knocker. A canted bay window with a flat top and double-hung sashes with small panes and margin lights is also present. The east end block has double-hung sash windows with small panes on both floors. The interior showcases high-quality doors and cornices in a style typical of the 1840s.
