Description
St John's House, built around 1600 and later, is a timber-framed and plastered house located on the north side of White Street in Great Dunmow. It has two storeys and features three parallel gabled roofs covered with peg tiles. The front facade facing White Street includes imitation timber framing under the gable and three double hung sash windows with central vertical glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a central canted bay window with double hung sash windows. To the west, there are two additional double hung sash windows, and to the east, there is an early 19th-century flat hooded doorcase with pilasters, along with one more double hung sash window. The house has several 19th-century red brick chimney stacks, one of which is exposed on the east flank wall. Inside, the house reveals a two-bay timber frame structure from around 1600, which was formerly jettied towards the street and features elegantly shaped jowls. The rear wall shows a moulded chamfer that indicates where a former wide mullioned and transomed window was located, with mortices still visible.
