Description

The cottage on the return frontage to Mill Lane dates from the late 16th century, 17th century, and 18th century. It is a two-storey building that is timber framed and plastered, featuring a hipped peg tile roof at the front, with a parallel range at the rear and two gabled wings.

The front elevation has three double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds on the first floor. The ground floor is supported by eight Doric pilasters that frame an entablature and cornice, which in turn frame three double-hung sash windows with small panes and two simple, pilastered door surrounds. The flank elevation facing Mill Lane includes two cast iron casements with leaded lights, two timber casements, and simple hooded door surrounds, accessed by a flight of steps with a contemporary iron handrail.

Inside, there are remnants of a late 16th-century crosswing at the southern end, featuring jowled posts and a back wall inglenook fireplace with a moulded mantel beam. There is also a late 18th-century panelled room with a similarly disguised panelled door leading to the staircase. The roof has been rebuilt, and there are remnants of later 17th-century framing in the adjacent cottage and No. 6.
