Description

The Maltings at Boyes Croft is a maltings complex that dates back to the early 16th century and includes later additions. The building features a timber frame with plaster, some weatherboarding, and brick elements. The long 16th-century range has a gabled peg tile roof, is largely rendered, and has weatherboarding in the upper half, along with old battened or diamond mullioned window openings.

To the east, there is a drying kiln with a conical peg tile roof, a rendered top, and a timber weather cover supported by iron stays. North of this kiln, there is a 19th-century extension that is lean-to in style, made of red brick with a slate roof. Beyond this is a taller barn-like block with a half-hipped peg tile roof and a lean-to roof over an open gallery and ladder stairs, featuring some old pargetting.

At the west end, there is a small two-storey square block with a weatherboarded first floor above red brick, a gabled peg tile roof, and a loft access door. Further west, there is another drying kiln with a square plan and peg tiles, along with a later outbuilding that has been converted into a day centre.

Inside the early 16th-century range, there are eight crown posts, bracing, and long jowls on the storey posts. The first floor is supported by binders with hanging knees, and the flat section floor joists have soffit tenons with diminished haunches.
