Description
14 and 14A High Street is a building that originally served as a bank and was formerly a house, dating from the 15th century and early 19th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plaster, although there is 20th-century underbuilding and a red brick flank wall at the southern end. The building has two storeys and features a peg tile roof that is gabled at the northern end and hipped at the southern end. There is a large ridge line stack located off-centre.
The front of the building has a parapet and a painted timber cornice with modillions, topped by a central pediment. The first floor contains five 20th-century double-hung sash windows with small panes. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows and a slightly projecting 20th-century porch block that includes a cornice. At the rear, there is a slate-hipped roof red brick stable block, which is connected to the main building by a 20th-century banking hall.
Inside, the building reveals remnants of a 15th-century hall house, with crosswings at both the northern and southern ends, as well as remains of a crownpost roof in the northern crosswing. The building is included primarily for its group value.
