Description
No. 5 Stortford Road is a building that dates from the 17th to 18th century, originally serving as a house and now used as offices. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a hipped 'U' shaped roof and a large chimney on the eastern ridge line. The building has two storeys and a front elevation that includes three double-hung sash windows with small panes arranged as two square units, along with a central narrow sash window. On the ground floor, there is a central narrow sash window in what was once the front door position, flanked by canted, flat-topped bay windows with double sashes and a plastered plinth, one of which has a cellar vent grill. The building also has two gabled attic dormers with double-hung sashes and small panes.
The eastern flank wall features an early 19th-century doorcase with steps, fluted Doric half columns, a glazed panel in the frieze, and a well-crafted six-panel door with diamond shapes in the top panels and long vertical ovals in the center panels. Additionally, there is a cast iron mid-19th-century lamp bracket. Inside, the building reveals some exposed timber framing, including a halved and bladed scarf joint in the top plate and a moulded former tie beam in the first-floor structure. There is also an inglenook fireplace with a stop-chamfered mantel beam.
