Description

Rood End House is a Grade II listed building located on the north side of Stortford Road in Great Dunmow. This structure, which dates from the early 19th century and possibly earlier, was originally a house and is now used as offices. It features a timber frame with plaster and a peg tile gabled roof that is set behind a continuous parapet.

The front façade, characteristic of the early 19th century, showcases a delicate painted timber cornice and six double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and small panes. Below these, there are five additional similar windows and an off-centre doorcase. The doorcase is adorned with reeded Doric half columns that support a flat hood and entablature, which includes a central horizontal panel and three horizontal diamond motifs. This arrangement frames a semi-circular fanlight with radial lobed glazing bars, above a six-panel door that features reeded central panes.

At the eastern end of the building, there is a single-storey rendered extension with a gabled peg tile roof. This extension includes a recessed early 19th-century door with margin glazing and a barred fanlight, as well as one similar double-hung sash window. The building also has three dormers set behind the parapet, which have small panes and slightly segmental heads. The rear of the house has a very large truncated wall with a brick stack and a 19th-century two-storey extension with a slated roof. Inside, there is a notable dog-leg staircase from the early 19th century.
