Description

The building at 23 and 25 Stortford Road is a group of flats, a shop, and offices, dating to the early 19th century, with possible earlier elements. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a hipped peg tile roof concealed behind front parapets and a gable at the rear. The front elevation features a recessed central section, on the first floor with a double-hung sash window containing small panes, and a tripartite sash window. The ground floor has a canted bay window with small-pane sash windows and coved soffits. An east-projecting wing has a double-hung sash window with small panes, and a curved window set within the northeast corner. Below this is a 19th-century shopfront with a 20th-century door and fascia. The west-projecting wing has a double-hung sash window above a further double-hung sash, and a simple entrance door. A central ridge line brick stack rises from the building, with fragments of ashlar visible within the plasterwork. A single-storey rear extension with a slate hipped roof is also present. Internally, a ground-floor room in No. 25 contains good late 18th/early 19th-century panelling.
