Description

No. 10 Stortford Road is a butcher's shop, slaughterhouse, and flat that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a gabled slate roof over the front section. The first floor is made of ashlar and has four double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds and margin glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a full-length canopy supported by wrought iron brackets over a canted bay window with double-hung sashes. The entrance includes an early 19th-century doorcase with two diamond motifs on the frieze, and a shopfront with three-light cross-glazing barred windows flanking a simple door.

To the east, there is a single double-hung sash window with a moulded surround and small panes, accompanied by a pilaster. The carriageway, which has gates and lattice ventilators above, is expressed as a crosswing at the rear, featuring a cast iron leaded light casement in the north wall. The main block has a continuous peg-tiled roof that slopes down to the first floor level, and there is a two-storey block with a gabled peg-tiled roof at right angles to the rear, complete with a gable end stack. Beyond this, there is a single-storey block, likely a kitchen, with a peg-tiled roof, along with a peg-tiled gabled brick building that has a loft access door. The rear courtyard is completed by pens and outbuildings with pantile roofs. The interior includes a crosswing from the 16th century or earlier at the east end and a similarly constructed two-storey block adjacent to it. The west end block is two storeys high and likely dates from the 17th century.
