Description
This building, located on Stortford Road in Great Dunmow, is a group value building that likely began as offices or houses, dating back to the 16th century or earlier, and was substantially refronted in the early 19th century. It is timber framed and rendered with plaster. The building presents two principal sections to the front elevation. The western section has a peg tile roof with a ridge line, a small stack, and three double-hung sash windows featuring a moulded surround and small panes, set above an open pedimented doorcase supported on small scroll brackets. The main block has a peg tile roof with a hip and gablet at the east end and a smaller hipped peg tile roof with a large stack in the valley between the two. A plastered parapet with a painted timber cornice fronts the entire structure. This main range is symmetrical, with three narrow double-hung sash windows with small panes, separated by square sections of the same, on the first floor. The ground floor features a central open pedimented doorcase with Doric columns, an elliptical fanlight, and a six-panel door. Tripartite sash windows flank the doorcase, with small panes, and similarly proportioned sashes extend to the outer edges of the façade. The interior reveals remnants of earlier timber-framed structures.
