Description

No. 8 Stortford Road is a former house that has been converted into shops and a flat. It dates from the late 14th century and features a timber-framed and plastered structure with two storeys. The building has a gabled jettied design and a 20th-century addition that includes tile hanging, imitation timber framing, and decorative bargeboards. The main roof is covered with peg tiles, hipped at the front and rear of the west end, and gabled at the east end, with some weatherboarding present. There is a gable end stack at the west end and a large stack at the rear of the west cross-wing.

On the first floor, there is an oriel bay window with double-hung sashes that have small panes. In the centre of the elevation is an early 19th-century double-hung sash window with a moulded surround and margin glazing bars. To the east end, there is a similar but earlier window with small panes. Below these windows, there are two 20th-century shopfronts, along with an early 19th-century doorcase.

Inside, the building retains significant features from the late 14th century, particularly in the west end cross-wing, which includes a steeply raking chamfered tie beam, very thick arch braces, short angled jowls, wide spaced studs, and remnants of a crown-post roof. On the back wall, there is a high-quality fireplace from 1840, decorated with Adam style figures and a label indicating the maker's title of 'Peace and Plenty'.
