Description

No. 8 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and residence. It dates from the 17th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed, covered in plaster and weatherboarding, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house has two bays and faces northwest. In the left bay, there are two hearths with a passage between them, and the flues from these hearths join to form a single stack located behind the central axis of the building. There is a rear wing that has two to three bays extending from the left bay, which includes an end stack, and a crosswing beyond that. A single-storey extension from the 20th century is attached to the rear of the right bay.

The house is two storeys tall and features a 20th-century shop window. On the first floor, there is one early 19th-century sash window with 12 lights and one late 19th-century tripartite sash window with a configuration of 2-4-2 lights. The entrance has two half-glazed four-panel doors, each with a plain overlight above. Inside, in the right bay of the main range, there is a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, although the studs of the rear wall have been removed. The early 19th-century staircase features a branching design with turned newels, stick balusters, and a truncated handrail. Both floors have borrowed lights made of handmade glass. The building is included for its group value with other nearby structures.
