Description

No. 178 on Thorpe Road is a cottage dating from the 16th century or earlier. It is constructed with a timber frame and has a plastered exterior. The roof is clad in corrugated asbestos, which may be covering the original thatch. The building is one storey high with attics and features a central attached diagonal shaft chimney stack. There are two 20th-century casement windows and a central 20th-century gabled porch. The cottage has two bays with a central chimney stack. Inside, notable features include halved arched braces on the walls, chamfered bridging joists supporting an inserted ceiling, and original stairs located by the chimney. The roof structure includes side purlins, and there is a rear wing.
