Description

No. 2 Eastgate Street is a house dating from around 1800, constructed of red Flemish-bond brickwork and topped with a gabled clay plain tile roof. It stands three storeys high, with attics and cellars. The front facade features a five-window arrangement, with projecting brick bands marking the storey heights and a black tarred plinth. The low second floor contains two flush double-hung sash windows with moulded surrounds, positioned beside a blind window recess. The first floor has five double-hung sash windows with small panes, each topped with flat rubbed brick arches. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows flanking a semicircular arch-headed recessed entrance, which includes rendered impost blocks. The entrance features a contemporary six-panel door with a moulded architrave and a plain glass fanlight above. The building has one stack on the northwest gable and two on the southeast gable.

Inside, the layout remains largely unchanged, featuring a narrow entrance hall with panelled side partitions. There is a contemporary dogleg stair with turned balusters and a column newel. The ground and first-floor rooms are adorned with early 19th-century dado rails, doors, and architraves. Recesses beside the fireplaces have segmental-arched heads, with one pair now serving as cupboards with serpentine shelves. The first-floor room includes a fireplace with an eared architrave.
