Description

This building is an antique shop located at No. 15 St Austin's Lane in Harwich, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with brick facades on the front. The roof is partly covered with clay plain tiles and partly with Welsh slate, and it has a hip at the street corner. The St Austin's Lane side has a red Flemish-bond brick facade from around 1800 and a 19th-century cast-iron street nameplate. The brick return front facing Eastgate Street is rendered and has a raised band between the storeys.

On the exterior, the first floor includes one flush double-hung sash window with small panes and a tripartite window of a similar style. There is also cellar access, an entrance door, and a 19th-century public house front that wraps around to Eastgate Street, mostly a 20th-century replica. This front features mullioned and transomed windows, pilasters, a painted fascia, and panelled stall risers. All windows have flat gauged brick arches with steeply raked voussoirs. On Eastgate Street, the first floor has one double-hung sash window with small panes, while the ground floor has two recessed 19th-century double-hung sash windows, each with a single vertical glazing bar.

Notably, remnants of an early 16th-century timber frame can still be seen, which was once jettied on both frontages. This includes a dragon beam and plain joists with central tenons and diminished haunches. Additionally, part of a tie beam and a substantial post from an earlier frame survive, along with an adjoining stack from the 16th century.
