Description
No. 6 King's Quay Street is a shop with a flat, dating from the early 19th century, and possibly earlier. The building is timber-framed and has ashlared plaster with a hipped concrete pantile roof added in the 20th century. There is an outbuilding to the northwest made of red brick in Flemish bond with a lean-to roof covered in Welsh slate.
The building has two storeys and a cellar. The front elevation features two flush double-hung sash windows on the first floor, each with single vertical glazing bars. The ground floor includes a recessed entrance with a 20th-century door consisting of six glazed panels, alongside a similar double-hung sash window. There is also a glazed light to the cellar, protected by an iron grille. The 19th-century shop front wraps around to the southeast flank, complete with a cornice hood, fascia, and a five-light window with a central transom and ventilator strips above. A large panel with a moulded frame is located on the stall riser.
On the southwest flank, there is a flat-roofed dormer featuring a double-hung sash window with six panes. The first floor has another double-hung sash window matching the main elevation, while the ground floor includes a shop front return with simple pilasters and a 19th-century window with three top-hung ventilators, plus a small double-hung sash window with plain glass. The outbuilding has a door to the loft on the first floor, which is set under a segmental-arched head.
The corner facing Castlegate Street is curved, with brick corbelling creating a right angle under the eaves. Within this curve is an entrance door with a segmental-arched head and a large glazed pane above two flush panels. A blue and white metal street nameplate is mounted on the wall above. The elevation facing Castlegate Street has one six-pane double-hung sash window with a segmental-arched hood on the ground floor, a small 20th-century window in an old opening under the eaves, and a small double-hung sash window with a wooden lintel on the ground floor. A large red brick chimney stack is located on the northwest flank of the main block. Inside, the ground floor features small floor joists that are exposed in the ceiling.
