Description
This is a terrace of five houses located on Castlegate Street, built in the mid-18th century. The houses are constructed mainly of red Flemish-bond brickwork, with a gabled clay plain tile roof. The left-hand end wall of number 9 is of stone, possibly incorporating elements of an earlier building.
The exterior features a moulded painted timber cornice and a raised brick band separating the ground and first floors. Each house has a gabled dormer window with a two-light casement. The first-floor windows are square, flush double-hung sash windows with two vertical glazing bars. Ground-floor windows are flush double-hung sash windows with small panes, each with an arched head constructed of rubbed brick. Door openings also feature similar brick arches, a quadrant moulded architrave, and a blank brick panel above (rendered on number 11A). The doors are six-panelled; number 9 has glazed top panels, while number 11A has replacement lower panels.
The rear of each house has a gabled roof positioned at a right angle, with a 20th-century roof terrace behind a solid parapet. Number 11A has a larger two-storey rear extension with a gabled clay plain tile roof.
Internally, some units have exposed spine beams with run-out stops, and cross walls are timber-framed.
