Description
This barn, located 35 meters north-north-west of Number 1 Upper Barns, dates from around 1600. It features a timber frame that is cement rendered and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated iron. The barn has five bays aligned east-west and was extended by one bay to the east in the 19th century. There is a lean-to extension on the north side of the middle bay of the original building.
The structure includes jowled posts, heavy studding with curved tension bracing set into the interior, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the top plates, and a clasped purlin roof with arched wind bracing. The original arched braces to the tiebeams have been replaced with bolted knees. Initially, there was a single aisle to the north and a midstrey also to the north, but the aisle has been demolished and studding has been added below the arcade plate. The lean-to extension now occupies the position of the former midstrey.
