Description

Barn. Constructed around 1300, with significant extensions and refurbishment around 1500, and incorporating elements from the mid-18th century. The barn is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, with a tiled roof, and features two gabled midstreys on the east side. It is an aisled barn of 6 bays. The original phase of the barn consists of the 5 bays located furthest south, dating back to circa 1300. This section displays jowled posts, passing braces to the tie beams, and “reversed assembly” eaves to the aisle, with side-facing jowled aisle posts, notably well-preserved on the west side. Each bay contains 4 widely spaced studs and splayed, under-squinted scarf joints. The passing braces are morticed to the aisle posts and feature unnotched lap joints to the tie beams. Around 1500, the barn underwent reconstruction, including a revised roof framing and an additional bay to the north. The east side was also rearranged, with the introduction of new arcade posts and tie beams that incorporated the existing passing braces. The new roof utilizes old rafters from a simple collar/rafter roof and incorporates new principals with collars, clasped purlins, and a ridge piece trapped above small apex collars. Additional mid-bay and apex collars act as intermediary trusses. The top plates, with halved and bridled scarf joints, appear to be replacements from approximately 1500. The two large midstreys, featuring cantilevered gables, were not depicted on a 1727 map by John Thomas but are shown on a map from 1778 by Benjamin Chambers.
