Barn at Rear of Numbers 156 to 160 (Even)

This is a barn located at the rear of numbers 156 to 160 on High Street in Kelvedon. It dates from the early 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The barn is timber framed, covered with weatherboarding, and has a roof made of handmade red clay pantiles. It consists of four bays aligned northeast to southwest, with an aisle on the southeast side only and a midstrey to the northwest. There are 19th-century lean-to extensions on each side of the midstrey, constructed with the same materials.

The northwest elevation features original large doors that need repair, along with one 19th-century halved stable door in each lean-to. The structure includes jowled arcade posts and jowled wall posts in the northwest wall, while the aisle posts are unjowled. All arched arcade braces and most arched braces to cambered tiebeams are intact, except for one. The arcade plate has a face-halved and bladed scarf joint, and the aisle plate requires repair. The end walls and aisle wall have straight braces that are trenched outside the heavy studding, while the northwest wall has straight braces that are trenched inside the studding. The roof features clasped purlins with collars at half-bay intervals, and there is a 20th-century inserted floor in the two northeast bays.

The midstrey is a separate structure but similar in construction and date, with jowled posts only at the front and straight braces trenched outside the studding. There are short curved braces across the top corners of the great doorway, and the roof of the midstrey has been rebuilt with a ridge. This barn is shown on the First Edition 25-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1875 as part of Chambers's Farm.
