Description

14 and 16 Broad Street are a pair of houses, now partly used as offices, dating from the 17th century but significantly altered and refronted in the late 18th or early 19th century. The buildings are timber-framed but have been rebuilt in red brick laid in Flemish bond. They feature a plain tile roof with painted brick dentilled eaves and no visible chimney stack.

The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window range. On the first floor, there are three-over-six sash windows with painted channelled voussoirs, keystones, and sills. The ground floor has two shallow bay windows, with the left one being canted and featuring 20th-century multi-pane glazing. Each side has a renewed doorcase with a 20th-century door, topped by a segmental brick arch and accessed via stone steps. A painted rendered plinth runs along the base.

Inside, the buildings showcase square-panelled timber-framing with passing braces in the side and party walls, heavily-chamfered spine beams, and exposed joists, along with a partly stone-flagged floor. Notably, No. 16 retains much of its timber-framing, including chamfered joists, an altered roof pitch, a rear cross-wing, and an internal chimney with an open fireplace, decorative mantelpiece, and cast-iron grate.
