Description

24 and 26 Broad Street are two houses and shops that form part of a continuous row with Nos. 28 and 30. They date from the mid-18th century and have undergone later alterations and rear extensions. The buildings are constructed of brick with a lined stucco render and feature a plain tile roof, which has been partly renewed. The roof includes two dormers, brick dogtooth eaves, and a rear off-ridge stack.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a six-window range, two of which are blocked. The gabled dormers have six-pane casement windows. Each floor has a plat band. On the first floor, there are segmental-headed windows, with the second and fifth windows being blind. The remaining windows are 9/9 sashes that have thick glazing bars, exposed boxes, projecting sills, and shallow moulded keystones.

On the ground floor, there are two partly remodelled 19th-century shopfronts. The right shopfront features a shallow bay window with plate glazing, deep corner mullions, an overlight, a panelled dado, and an entrance on the left with a 20th-century part-glazed door, a blocked overlight, a wooden architrave, and two stone steps, all beneath a bracketed wooden cornice with dentils. The left shopfront is similar but has a four-pane window with thick glazing bars and a 20th-century door with an overlight set in a deep planked reveal. At the left end, there is a plate glass sash with a segmental head and sill, while at the right end, a wooden-framed plank door leads to a side passage that retains vestigial light timber-framing in the wall. The buildings have a deep rendered plinth. The interior has not been inspected.
