Description

The Royal Arcade and The Terrace is an early 19th century building, originally a hotel (formerly known as the Royal Three Tuns Hotel), now used as a restaurant, shops, and offices. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, some areas being hipped with deep eaves soffits, and features three brick ridge stacks.

The building is three storeys high and has a 3x5 bay arrangement. The Bridge Street elevation has three bays. The second floor has six-over-six sash windows flanking a central replacement six:six-pane casement window. The first floor features multi-pane full-length sashes incorporating margin lights, with finely-jointed flush voussoirs and keystones. The ground floor has two ten:ten sashes flanked by a central porch with rectangular columns, pilasters, a bracketed oversailing cornice, a two-leaf part-glazed door, a fanlight with radial glazing bars, and a panelled reveal.

The Broad Street elevation has five bays. The first-floor windows are similar to those on Bridge Street, incorporating lintels, opening dado panels, and access to a full-width decorative wrought-iron verandah with a swept roof and wooden floor, all supported by iron and wooden brackets. A round-arched 20th-century doorway at the right end of the ground floor provides access to a remodelled courtyard and a 20th-century shop front.

The interior has been extensively remodelled, though some original features, including moulded window architraves and wooden dados on the first floor, remain.
