Description
Bedford House is an early 19th-century house located on Bridge Street in Pershore. It is constructed of brick with a stuccoed front and features a hipped plain tile roof behind a high parapet, which has two rendered end stacks and lateral stacks on the side and rear.
The building has three storeys and a cellar, with a two-window range. The ground floor is rusticated with a plinth, while the upper floors are adorned with plat bands and panelled pilasters at the ends and centre, supporting a deep eaves cornice. On the second floor, there are 4/8 sash windows set in moulded architraves. The first floor features full-height 8/12 sash windows in moulded architraves that open onto a full-width decorative wrought-iron balcony, which has a pitched lead roof supported by brackets. The ground floor has 8/8 sash windows with projecting sills, and there is a cellar grille. The doorcase on the left includes a decorative fanlight and a six-panel door, which was formerly two-leaved, accessed by two stone steps with nosings. The right return and rear have a brick dentilled eaves cornice.
Inside, the hall has a curved wall, and the dog-leg staircase features a handrail with a spiral curtail and stick balusters. The fluted doorcases are embellished with paterae and panelled reveals, and there are decorative doors with round-arched panels, some of which are grained. An internal decorative fanlight and a grey marble fireplace add to the interior's elegance.
Historically, this house may have undergone extensive remodelling of an earlier structure mentioned in 1784.
