Description
Number 5 and the adjoining barn at the north end are located on Ampton Road in Edgbaston and date back to the mid 17th century. Originally, they formed a single barn range associated with Nos 6 and 7. In the mid 19th century, alterations were made to create a cottage in one half for the Calthorpe Estate.
The cottage, which is Number 5, is one and a half storeys tall and features painted brickwork, although it was originally timber framed. It has a retiled gable end roof and includes two windows with lattice casements that have brick drop moulds, as well as two gabled half dormers and a plain doorway.
The surviving two bays of the barn at the north end also have back walls and a roof covered with mid 19th century tiles. The barn features a cross gable that contains cart doors with a loft hatch above. The roof trusses are substantial and are pegged, with raking struts connecting the tie beam to the principal and notched back purlins. This building is included for its group interest.
