Description

A former barn and two adjoining cottages, dating from the mid-17th century, are located on School Lane in Great Budworth. The building is constructed with oak framing, plaster panels, and brick nogging, and is topped with a clay tile roof. It is a single storey plus attic, with three windows on each level. There’s a sandstone plinth, with small framing to the front and rear, featuring a single intermediate rail. Inside the right gable end of the barn, a pair of damaged crucks are visible. The barn has brick nogging, while the cottages have plaster panels. Diagonal braces run beneath the eaves. The building includes boarded doors, three oak-framed gabled dormers, and small-pane wood casements; the windows in No. 32, and the top-right casement in No. 33, are leaded. The right gable has a half-hip. Two plinthed brick chimneys, likely from the later 19th century and potentially associated with Rowland Egerton Warburton, incorporate engaged diagonal flues.

The interior of No. 32 was not inspected. However, No. 33 features chamfered oak beams and a gadrooned oak bressumer to what was formerly an inglenook.
