Description

The Old Schoolhouse is a school building, dating back to approximately 1600 and originally commissioned for Sir John Deane. It is now used as a craft shop and meeting room. The building is constructed of irregular bond small brown brick with red sandstone dressings, and has a stone-slate roof with oak-framed gable ends. It is rectangular in shape, with one room and two storeys. The front and rear elevations both have two four-light windows on the lower storey and two five-light windows on the upper storey. The gable ends have a five-light window each on the lower storey, and to the right gable end, on the upper storey. All windows feature leaded glass, bevelled lintels and jambs with a rectangular groove, steeply weathered cills, and recessed bevelled mullions. An oak cross-boarded door provides access. A lateral chimney of one flue is located at the rear.

The interior includes a boarded partition that divides the stair from the shop area. There are two ovolo beams, one of which is stopped. An oak staircase with winders at the top features a plain newel post, a large moulded rail, and one heavy vase baluster per step. Two internal oak trusses remain, with kingposts, separated raking ties, and mortices that indicate a former attic floor. The oak purlins have curved windbraces. A balustrade is present on the landing, and the floor has been replaced with softwood.
