Description

Sawmill Cottage and the adjoining cottage are two cottages that were originally part of a row of three, dating from the 17th century. Sawmill Cottage has been altered and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The unnamed cottage to the left features a timber frame with lath and plaster infill, resting on a lias plinth. Sawmill Cottage has been refronted and extended with colourwashed brick, retaining one exposed post, and has a small amount of late 20th-century weatherboarding below the eaves. It includes a central brick and lias bread oven projection and has a 20th-century tile roof with largely rebuilt brick ridge stacks. The unnamed cottage has a two-unit plan, is two storeys high, and has a two-window range with an old plank door and leaded-light casements. Inside, it features exposed framing and ceiling beams, as well as an open fireplace. Sawmill Cottage was originally two one-unit cottages that have been converted and extended into a three-unit cottage. It is one storey with an attic and has a two-storey addition, featuring a three-window range, a 20th-century half-glazed door with a hood, and late 20th-century casements with glazing bars under segmental brick arches on the ground floor. There are also two 20th-century dormers, and the interior includes exposed framing and broad-chamfered ceiling beams.
