Description
Upton House and the attached barn are a house and barn complex dating from the 17th century, with a front range added in the late 18th century. The rear range is timber framed with whitewashed brick infill and a lias plinth, topped with a tile roof. The front range is made of brick, featuring a brick dentil cornice and a slate roof with brick end stacks. The building consists of two parallel ranges: the rear range is a three-unit layout, while the front range has a central staircase plan. It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range. The entrance features a flat six-panelled door with a fanlight and decorative glazing, set within a reeded wood doorcase that includes simple consoles and an open pediment. The ground floor has 16-pane sash windows under rusticated rendered flat arches with keyblocks. The left return side of the rear range displays jowled posts and brick infill. At the rear, there is a one-storey and attic section with a two-window range and dormers, alongside a taller two-storey one-window range. The building includes 19th-century casements with glazing bars and a small 19th-century brick range.
Inside, the rear range reveals exposed framing and ceiling beams, some of which are chamfered. The kitchen features an open fireplace with a bread oven, while the sitting room has an open fireplace with a smoke cupboard that has a grille door. There is a two-plank door with H-L hinges and winder stairs made of old boards. The attached barn, which is oriented at right angles to the rear of the house, is partially incorporated into the house. It is timber framed with brick infill and has a weatherboarded rear. The barn includes plank doors and garage doors inserted into the end bay, with jowled posts on the end wall and a queen strut roof. A 20th-century single-storey addition is located in the re-entrant angle.
